Maths & Physics Internships
UPDATE: 23 March 2020
With regret we must announce the suspension of our Maths and Physics Internship programme for June/July 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. If government guidelines change within a reasonable timeframe we will update this website accordingly.
If you have a passion for your subject and would like to make a real difference to the lives of young people, we’d like to show you what it’s like to be a teacher of Maths or Physics in a secondary school. We are looking for undergraduates on Maths, Physics or Engineering degree courses (ideally those in their penultimate year) who could come to us for 4 weeks in the summer. You would receive £1,200 (£300 a week).
- We can pay you to spend a month with us, learning all about it.
- Spend time shadowing teaching staff
- Guided support from an experienced mentor
- Get an introduction to what teacher training would involve including using data to inform your teaching
- Gain work experience and a reference from a professional organisation
- See what one year teacher training options would be available when you graduate; how to apply and how you can fund it with bursaries or even a salary while you train.
This internship programme is coordinated by the West London Teaching School Alliance (WLTSA) for schools in West London and by New River Teaching School Alliance (NRTSA) for schools in North London. We both deliver outstanding university accredited postgraduate teacher training courses in a partnership of schools - with a view to trainees potentially working in our schools once they qualify.
Our short internship programmes aim to provide a really useful experience of what it's like to work in a school, to prime potential applicants for our courses that start in September every year.
Please use our Online Application Form
If you would like to contact us regarding the programme, please email Alex Dijkhuis on adijkhuis@sacredh.lbhf.sch.uk
Please note that all our schools wishing to host interns will come together for a joint interview day on Tuesday 21 April 2020. The venue for the interview day will be Sacred Heart High School, 212 Hammersmith Road, London W6 7DG (which is literally across the road from Hammersmith tube station (District and Piccadilly lines).
The closing date for applications is the end of Tuesday 31 March 2020.
It is proposed that the internship would run for 4 weeks from Monday 1st June although there may be a little flexibility on this to fit in with your term dates.
If you prefer to apply to schools in North London please visit the NRTSA Internship page to use their separate application form.
It is important that you consider which school, from the West London list below, you would prefer to be based in. You will be able to identify your preference in the application form. You should consider the location of the school and how easy it would be for you to get there. We have a WLTSA Map which shows the location of all 60 of our partner schools. You will be able to find the internship schools on the map (secondary schools are shown as blue dots and there is a magnifying glass feature to zoom in).
In selecting your school, you may also like to read about them because you might like to be an intern in a school that you later choose to train in and possibly then work in once you qualify. Some are girls' schools, some are boys' schools, some are mixed schools and some are faith schools and one is a special needs school that teaches up to and including A-Level. Please be assured that you do not need to be Catholic or C of E to teach in a Catholic or C of E school. Please refer to our description of each WLTSA internship school.
For an informal chat, please feel free to contact us on the numbers or emails below.
