WLTTA Primary School Bursaries
For September 2025, we have 30 primary schools (50 vacancies) for unsalaried primary trainees. All of these schools offering unsalaried places are aware that for trainees, the training cost can be significant because the DfE offers no bursaries for primary teacher training.
20 of these primary schools are however able to offer a school bursary of their own to help reduce the cost to the trainee. We have 40 primary places with these unique bursaries ranging from £1,500 to £10,000 depending on the school. We have set up specific courses for the schools that are offering a bursary and you can see this on our vacancy page.
This list below includes both secular and faith schools. You do not need to be Catholic to work in a Catholic School or to be Church of England to work in a C of E School. You simply need to be respectful of the faith and values of any school you wish to train or work in.
WLTTA SCHOOL BURSARY GENERAL CONDITIONS
The school bursary is paid termly in three equal instalments and is dependent on the host school judging the trainee to be making satisfactory progress. The school bursaries are subject to taxation (although it is likely to fall under your tax threshold) and those receiving such payment will be required to invoice the school by letter, including a ‘Unique Reference Number’ provided by HMRC, to prove that you are declaring it.
Any trainee receiving a bursary would be expected to remain at the school at least until the end of the school’s summer term in July 2026. Payment of the bursary is the responsibility of the host school (as opposed to WLTTA) and could be discussed at interview as appropriate.

Student loans for fees and for maintenance are available on all unsalaried courses, whether or not you take a school bursary. A WLTTA school bursary will NOT affect your eligibility for either the maintenance loan or the fees loan; this has been agreed by DfE.
