When would the trainee be in school
UNSALARIED TRAINEES
Autumn term: All School Direct trainees start on the first day of term at their host school; their university course commences later in September. Trainees can be expected to return to their host school in October when they start their teaching; their loading increases incrementally until Christmas.
Spring term: St Mary’s and Roehampton trainees will spend this term in their second placement school following some time at university. You may have a reciprocal placement during this time from a different WLTSA school. IOE UCL trainees resume their training at their host school until the end of January and start their second school placement around February half term for 6 weeks, following some time at university.
Summer term: All trainees return to their host school to complete their training by May half term.
SALARIED TRAINEES
The trainee, as a paid member of staff, will be expected to follow the school calendar in terms of teaching days, INSET and holidays. In addition to this, the trainee will be required at university for additional training throughout the year, 10-12 days approximately. The university tutor will also make visits for observations to monitor progress throughout the year.
The trainee will also have a 6 week placement at a second school. This will take place during the Spring term. It is not guaranteed that there will be a reciprocal placement for the host school so the host school must be prepared to cover the staff absence where necessary.
